SAP S/4HANA PRIVATE CLOUD
S/4HANA on your terms.
Opening
Some organisations genuinely need the flexibility
Public Edition suits businesses that can work within SAP's standard processes. Plenty cannot, for entirely legitimate reasons — processes shaped by regulation, a substantial custom code base that carries real operational value, or data residency requirements that determine where the system is allowed to run.
Private Edition gives you S/4HANA with room to keep what is genuinely yours, while SAP or a hyperscaler runs the infrastructure underneath. You get the modern platform without taking on the hosting.
The important part is deciding on evidence rather than instinct — because Private is the more expensive answer, and it is often chosen simply because it feels safer.
Public or Private Edition?
The decision most organisations are weighing up, side by side
| Public Edition | Private Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Process fit | You adopt SAP standard, with defined extension points. | You keep processes that genuinely differ, including heavily configured ones. |
| Custom code | No classic ABAP in the core; extensions built side-by-side or in-app. | Existing ABAP developments can move across after assessment. |
| Update cadence | Quarterly releases, applied by SAP. | You control upgrade timing, within the supported maintenance window. |
| Data residency | Available regions determined by SAP. | Greater control over where the system runs, which matters under some regulation. |
| Cost model | Subscription, generally lower and more predictable. | Higher, reflecting the dedicated environment and flexibility. |
| Typical timeline | Shorter, because the starting point is preconfigured. | Longer, particularly where custom code is being carried across. |
If you are not sure which side you fall on, that is a normal position and a readiness assessment settles it in weeks. It is a much cheaper question to answer before the project than during it.
What We See Most Often
The situations that come up in nearly every Private Edition conversation
A decision made on assumption
Private is chosen because it feels like the safer option, without testing how much of the process standard would actually have covered.
Custom code carried across unexamined
Years of ABAP moved as a block because assessing it felt like a project in itself — which means paying to maintain code nobody uses.
Residency requirements found late
Regulatory and data location constraints surface during design rather than being established at the start, when they would have shaped the decision.
What Changes
How we approach each of them
A decision made on evidence
A readiness assessment that measures process fit and custom code volume, so the edition is chosen on findings rather than instinct.
Custom code assessed before it moves
Usage analysis first. Code that has not been executed in years is retired rather than migrated and maintained.
Constraints established at the start
Residency, regulatory, and integration requirements confirmed before design, because they narrow the options considerably.
Private Edition isn't a permanent exemption from standard.
Many organisations use it as a staged path — move to S/4HANA now with the customisation intact, then reduce it deliberately over the following few years. That is a perfectly sound strategy, and it works far better when it is the plan from the outset rather than something you arrive at later.
RISE with SAP
One contract, one subscription
RISE bundles the S/4HANA licence, the infrastructure, and SAP's technical managed services into a single subscription with one contract. SAP takes responsibility for running the platform, on its own infrastructure or a hyperscaler of your choosing.
What RISE does not include is the transformation itself — the process design, the configuration, the data migration, and the change management. That is the part we do, alongside SAP. We help you understand what is inside the RISE contract, what falls to you, and where the gaps sit, before you sign rather than after.
How We Help
How we help
Readiness assessment
Process fit, custom code analysis, and residency requirements — producing a recommendation on edition with the evidence behind it.
RISE with SAP advisory
Understanding what the contract covers, what it does not, and how the responsibilities divide between SAP, you, and us.
Implementation and migration
Conversion or new implementation onto Private Edition, including custom code remediation and data migration.
Custom code assessment and remediation
Usage analysis, retirement of what is no longer used, and remediation of what remains.
Integration and extension
Connecting Private Edition to the rest of your landscape, and building extensions in ways that keep future upgrades manageable.
Application support
Ongoing functional and technical support once live, sitting alongside SAP's platform responsibilities under RISE.
Why Us
Why organisations choose VIPAS Technologies
We will tell you if Public would do
Private is the larger engagement, which is exactly why the recommendation should come from an assessment rather than from us. Where standard would fit, we say so.
We measure custom code before we move it
Usage analysis first. Migrating code nobody runs is a cost that continues every year afterwards.
We stay with you after go-live
RISE covers the platform. The applications, the processes, and the people still need support, and that is where we sit.
Public or Private — not sure which?
Tell us your current release, roughly how much custom code you carry, and any data residency requirements. We'll come back with a view on which edition fits — no obligation, and no sales pressure.
